WHY NORTHERN UGANDA?

In the 1990’s to the early 2000's there was fighting in Northern Uganda, between LRA rebels and the government. People were forced to go into refugee camps, schools and churches were destroyed, many were killed, and they lost their main source of income: agriculture and livestock. Now that there is peace, people have been returning to their homes and are in the process of rebuilding their lives.

Northern Uganda is currently the most impoverished region of Uganda. The majority of villagers are farmers, and the average local income is as low as $28 per month, less than $1 per day.

 

Our hope is that access to quality education will empower them to lift their region out of poverty. 

WHY PRIMARY EDUCATION?

While access to primary education has been increasing across Sub-Saharan Africa, many areas in Northern Uganda have been left behind and children still lack access to quality education. 

Some of the challenges they face are: 

DISTANCE: Students have to walk several hours to get to school

CONSISTENCY: Teachers are often absent (20-30%) and a high number of students drop out (33%)

QUALITY:  The quality of primary education in Uganda remains low, with low literacy rates

OUR IMPACT

Our founder is from Northern Uganda and we believe in locally-led development. Our goal is to use quality primary education to empower youth to bring themselves and their communities out of poverty. 

When enrollment rates increase and children access quality education, we hope to see:

  • A Reduction in Early Marriages and Pregnancies

  • Better Health Outcomes including Lower Rates of HIV

  • Community Development
